Signs your Mini needs looking at.

Most of these belong to the 1.6 petrol in the older cars. All of them are cheaper to fix the first time they show.

  • Rattle on a cold start

A few seconds of rattle after starting from cold is the classic sign of a stretched timing chain or worn tensioner.

  • Low oil warning

The older 1.6 can use oil quickly, and running it low is what wears the chain. Check the level every few weeks.

  • Coolant smell or loss

A sweet smell or a level that keeps dropping is usually the water pump or the thermostat housing.

  • Hesitation and misfire

Carbon on the inlet valves of the older petrols causes rough running. It can be cleaned off without replacing parts.

  • Oil on the engine

Oil around the timing cover or filter housing wants fixing before it reaches the belts or the exhaust.

  • Tyre pressure warning

On run flat tyres the car will still drive normally on a puncture, so the warning is the only sign. Get it checked.

Two generations of Mini.

A Mini built before 2014 and one built after look alike and are very different under the bonnet. The older 1.6 petrol needs closer watching. The later cars share their engines with BMW and are looked after the way a BMW is.

Your Mini warranty and its service history.

Under block exemption rules a Mini can be serviced by an independent garage without affecting the warranty, as long as the schedule is followed and the parts are of matching quality. Warranty repairs and recalls are paid for by Mini and still go to a dealer.

Minis keep their service history electronically, on the car and online. We add every service to that record and give you a written copy, so the history is complete when you sell.

No. Block exemption rules let an independent garage service a Mini under warranty as long as the schedule is followed and the parts are of matching quality. Warranty repairs and recalls are paid for by Mini and still go to a dealer.

On the 1.6 petrol fitted to Minis from about 2007 to 2014, a rattle for a few seconds after a cold start is the classic sign of a stretched chain or a worn tensioner. Book it in soon. A chain that jumps a tooth can wreck the engine.

Yes. Minis use condition based servicing, so the car decides what is due from how it has been driven. We read what it is asking for, do that work and reset each item so the next reminder comes up when it should.

The same 1.6 petrol is known for oil use and for carbon building up on its valves. We measure how much it uses, look for leaks from the timing cover and oil filter housing and tell you which it is before quoting.
